The Hildyard Arms is situated in the pretty, secluded and traffic-free village of Colburn, right on the Coast to coast path. This is an hour’s walk from Richmond and makes a good stopping point because Reeth to Richmond is short while the next stage of the Coast to Coast across the lowlands of the Vale of Mowbray is long. We are well used to C to C walkers and a welcome is assured.
Up the lane in Colburn town there is a good shop about 5 mins walk from the pub, a Co-op store with cash machine 1 mile away and further away a Tesco superstore (2 miles, taxi about £5), as well as other facilities (e.g. undertakers, car dealers…).
There are also some pleasant local walks – through riverside woods and past Easby Abbey to Richmond (about an hour), down to the river Swale and round the Batts (90 minutes) or over the fields to Hipswell (30 minutes).
The pub is a friendly country local, not a posh restaurant pub. It has a very nice large garden with room for several pitches at the back, with toilet, shower and washing facilities. There is a locked shed where bags can be deposited by luggage carriers like Sherpa and Packhorse. Camping is free as long as you are using the pub.
